Planning a fence

Plan the fence around your outdoor space

A fence changes the view, access and use of an outdoor space. Begin with the parts of the property that need privacy and the routes you need to keep open.

Begin with the spaces you use

A private seating area and an open garden may need different boundaries. Mark where you spend time and which views you want to screen. Walk those areas at ground level; a simple plan does not always show how a fence will change the feel of the yard.

Keep movement comfortable

Consider access from the house, storage, parking and the street. Gates should serve those routes as well as fit the fence design. Include the room needed for equipment, trash containers and any future outdoor work you already have in mind.

Coordinate appearance and care

Compare materials with the house and existing structures. Ask about cleaning, finishes and future repair before choosing solely by color. A fence can change how a property is used and looks, but a specific resale return should not be assumed or promised.
